Thriller Author Reflects on Overcoming Racial Barriers, Elevating Black Voices, and Celebrating Artistic Excellence During Black History Month
In honor of Black History Month and Martin Luther King Jr.’s enduring dream of equality, Richmond-based thriller author Anthony P. Jones is inviting the public to celebrate the power of Black voices in the arts while marking a pivotal moment in his literary career.
After more than 30 years as an author, three published novels, and nine more ready for release, Jones has emerged as a trailblazer in the thriller genre—a space where Black writers have historically faced limitations and narrow expectations. Despite being repeatedly advised to “write more urban,” Jones has stayed true to his identity as a thriller author, crafting suspenseful stories infused with intellect, history, and global stakes.
“I am a thriller author,” Jones says. “That is my voice, and I refuse to abandon it.”
Overcoming Barriers and Honoring MLK’s Dream
Jones’ career reflects the broader struggle for equity that Dr. King envisioned. From breaking racial barriers as the first Black stockbroker at Morgan Stanley in Nashville and Richmond to facing systemic bias in the literary world, Jones’ journey has been defined by perseverance. His personal and professional experiences—including moments of racial profiling—have shaped his storytelling, imbuing his novels with authenticity, depth, and a keen understanding of justice and resilience.
His works, including the politically charged thriller Operation Smokeout, combine fast-paced action with rich narrative complexity, earning him recognition as a voice that both entertains and educates. Beyond writing, Jones’ diverse interests in photography, culinary arts, and martial arts inform his storytelling, creating layered narratives that celebrate African American contributions to the arts.
An Immersive Literary Event at VMFA
To honor this journey and celebrate Black History Month, Jones will host a major literary launch and immersive cultural experience on April 8, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA).
This elegant, nontraditional launch invites attendees to experience storytelling and art live in a fine-arts setting. Guests will enjoy curated artistic moments, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and the opportunity to meet Jones, purchase signed copies of his latest novel, and engage with him directly. A VIP dinner will follow at the museum’s Amuse restaurant at 8:00 PM.
“Someone has to open the door,” Jones reflects. “If this moment helps open it wider for those coming after me, then every year of persistence was worth it.”
A Call to Action
Jones encourages Richmond-area media, cultural leaders, and community members to honor Black history through action—by supporting Black artists, investing in creative spaces, and being present at events that celebrate artistic freedom. His literary achievements are more than personal milestones; they are part of an ongoing commitment to make the arts inclusive, equitable, and reflective of diverse voices.
A dedicated father to his children Nicholas, Morgan, Alex, and Cassidy, and a pillar of the Richmond community, Jones embodies the spirit of Black History Month by paving the way for future generations in literature and beyond.
